St. Clare’s Primary School Receive Prestigious Green Flag Award From Eco-Schools NI

Dear Parents,

This week in St. Clare’s we are delighted to have received our third internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag Award. The Eco-Schools award programme, which is run by Tidy NI, encourages schools all over Northern Ireland to address a variety of environmental issues, ranging from biodiversity and litter to transport, which was our focus for this year.

How did St. Clare’s Primary School achieve ‘Green Flag’ status?

We worked very hard in our school to achieve this great award. We did things such as making a few girls out of each class a member of our Eco-Council. We met with Miss Mc Shane each week to work on achieving the things set out in our action plan. We also met with the Eco-Council each half term to discuss our progress and consult them on any action which needed to be taken.

In addition, we also did our litter log once a month and refurbished God’s Garden and around the school with Mrs Rafferty. This year we also participated in the Environmental Youth Speak and did very well.
Mr Murphy was very helpful in advising us about how to dispose of our rubbish correctly. We are now really good at recycling properly
.

In February we took part in the Translink Travel Challenge which encouraged us to travel less in our cars and more on foot and on the bus. The Eco-Schools assessors were very impressed with our results.

This year we also had a very successful bird watching season. We noted down how many of each bird we saw in our school grounds and made a pictogram of our results. More recently we have been planting lettuce which we shall be eating as part of a delicious Eco-Council summer salad celebration in June. We can’t wait to taste food which we have grown ourselves!

All of these things helped us to get our third Green Flag. We are very proud of our award and we can't wait to see our Green Flag flying high in our school.

Thank you to everyone who helped us to achieve our award.

Yours sincerely,

The Eco – Council 2013

Dyslexia Friendly School Charter mark:

Earlier this term we had a verification visit from the British Dyslexia Association. Lessons were observed, staff, pupils and parents were interviewed and results were analysed. We were informed by the assessor that our work was most impressive and have been awarded the British Dyslexia Association Dyslexia Friendly charter mark. This is a huge achievement for St Clare’s as very few schools in NI have gained the award. We are deeply committed to helping our pupils with Dyslexia and have worked for 3 years to improve our skills and knowledge.
It was very affirming to have our practice hailed by the external experts in this field, and our pupils with Dyslexia, through their determination and work ethic, are a source of great pride to us all.
